My Little Sailor Boy and Last Day on Big pattern Sale!

This was a "I couldn't help myself" outfits. I seen this shirt like this on Flicker through a friend and had to make one for my baby boy too! I adore the Out to sea fabric line and I really couldn't help myself into making this outfit. The only problem was I needed the just the right dress shirt pattern. You see the original one had this awesome collar stand in a different fabric other than the white. (I used a different fabric for mine though) So when I was tested the Charlie's Camp Shirt I kept thinking how this pattern is the one I needed for Caspian's shirt! I was right too!

This shirt is a size 1. The only mods I made to this pattern was to cut the bottom of the shirt out straight instead of the "curved" bottom edge. I took the lowest point, where the button placket is, and drew/cut a straight line from there. Easy peasy mod if I say so.

The pants are from Oliver + S Sail Boat pattern. I cut out a size 18-24 months for him so they are longer in the legs (he wears the 6-12 month size still form 3 summers ago!) but this way they will fit maybe just as long as all his other pairs. That and they will cover more leg this fall to keep him warmer.

These pants have this awesome front with four working button holes/buttons on them. The back has elastic casing for ease of dressing. On all of his pants I used the button hole elastic so I have been able to get even more wear out of all them.  Caspian's Sail Boat pants are the most worn pants I have made him, three years in row for first three pairs! (Yes it does help that he is my skinny bean pole, you are what you eat I guess) They have held up very well.

 

Here is the other favorite part of this shirt of mine, the back pleats! I did move the back pleats out about 1 1/2" to outer sides on this one so it didn't interfere with the birds in the sky on the print. I think it looks super cute on him....but I am him mama. ; )

A Requested Christmas Outfit for Garrett

 

Now this doesn't happen very often but one of my middle boys, Garrett, requested that I make him a Christmas outfit for his program at school this year. We chose the Oliver + S Sketchbook pattern for both shirt and pants. This is a favorite of mine and the boys both. He picked out the shirting from some on hand fabric I had in my stash. It's from my lovely grandmother so it very special, perfect for a Christmas shirt. It's polyester blend and has a sheen to it.  The shirt is a size 6, I added 3" to the length of the shirt and 1" to the sleeve length. While he has gotten taller he has not filled out any. I also hanged up the pocket a bit and made it triangle at the bottom instead of square.

 

The pants are a brown suiting I bought this past Easter but never got around to sew. Easter was full of smocking for the two little ones. He loves the fit and softness of both fabrics. These I just added length to make them pants form shorts. These are a size 7 so he will have tummy/bottom growing room.

 

I think he looks very sharp, so does his brother who has requested an outfit just like this one. That's Wyatt. They wear the same size clothes, right down do alterations. I am making him the same one so they don't fight over this one. I have his pants almost done as well.

 

I do love this pattern, it was love at first sew. : )

Sewing but not Blogging

 

I have really been sewing but honesty I have not sat down and try to write any post on them. I am way behind in what I want to have done so at this point I am setting just for what can be done. I have a quilt top almost done and ready for Sweet pea's birthday next month, (I need to start me G's too!) I did manage to finish up almost all of the Waldorf doll sewing with a great post to come on that! I have almost finished a pair of Tea party pants suit in brown suiting for my Prince C. I do love this and can't wait to finish.....and the list goes on and on.

 

So now onto the pants! They are Afterschool pants for Sweet pea as she really needed some new winter pants. She has really worn out all but one pair form last year out. She is as tough as the boys on pants. The top pair was request by her. How I do loves these, she wanted to match grandpa so she could go hunting with him. I added ruffles so they would like girly.

On the back pockets I top stitched oak leaves. I not sure if this helps but she loves it. They are very sturdy pants too, perfect to play in the snow today.

 



 

She also needs a dressy pair so I made these pale pink stretch twill with lace. I am a lace kick this past week so I had to add it. (Wait till you see her Christmas doll!)

I did make the hem longer on both of these pants so they would fit longer, Sweet pea seems to grow about 3" in six month time.

 

The fit is pretty good but I am afraid that this means I have to order the next size up in the pattern soon. We shall enjoy these while we can. : )

A Hunting We Will Go

 

Since moving back to home state the two middle boys have gotten very interested in hunting. My dad and brother go deer hunting and G and W really want to go with them. They are still young but everyone starts somewhere. Now I could go buy an outfit for them but what fun is that??

 

The shirt fabric was bought at a little country shop right up the road, as in less than a mile up the road. Oh I could spend hours in there! I bought the last yard of this so I am hoping she gets some more in soon. The pants are "upcycle". My mom bought a pair of the very nice overalls marked down to $3 after last hunting season but they were in a huge size so no one in the family could wear them. The fabric they were made out of is waterproof too, perfect for pants for the boys! I could not buy the fabric this cheep anywhere. It was just enough for a pair of Field trip pants.

 

Since making these G and W has been wearing them everyday. (I only made one pair for G so W needs his own very soon.) They have been called "the best thing you have ever sewed mom!". Yep, it makes me feel good when they love something I have made them. : D Now W told me that the sketchbook shirt long sleeve was not his style this past Easter but this shirt was a big hit with him. So it was not the pattern but the fabric. Go figure!

All he can talk about is going hunting now. He was telling me how grandpa and him are going to get a big buck this fall.

 

Both the shirt and pant patterns are from Oliver + S. The shirt is a favorite of mine and the most used pattern I own, the Sketchbook. I love it and hink that I could almost sew this in my sleep now. I love how it sews up and has such a lovely finish. I did do double top stitching just like the Field Trip pants pattern. Grandpa's shirts are like that and he wanted his to match grandpa's. It should make this a great work shirt too. I did change the pocket a bit on this one and added another one for two pockets on the front. I did make it 3" longer as well so it tucks in with ease.

 

G noticed the top stitching right away and loves it.

 

I did make a "box" on the back pleat too. One thing on the adults' shirt too.

 

The pants are made using the Field Trip pattern. It is the first time using this pattern for me. I was pleasantly surprised how easy these were to make. I should have know with the O+S patterns it was going to be. The top stitching really does make this pattern and love how it is going to make for no ironing. The two middle boys love, love these pants. I think I will have to make a few more pairs up for them, maybe denim? 

 

Next up, Halloween for the two little ones! I am very excited about starting sewing these!!

Bikes for Baby C

Fabric bikes that is!

 

I made little guy a Oliver + S Sketchbook top and Ben & Mia pants inspired form The Cottage Home. I have seemed to make this top pattern so much that it goes together quit quickly now. It is a favorite boy pattern of mine, top and shorts! I made him a 6-12 month top in the Children at Play fabric line. This fabric was made for Oliver + S patterns!

 For the pants I made some changes. I changed the waist band pattern into one pattern piece instead of two. I slimmed down the pants leg and added a cuff with a button tab and button. This is such a quick and easy pattern to make too. I made him the smallest size which has some room for growth. I left the pants a bit long so he has some growing room in length. I do love the piping detail on these pants pockets! It a big reason why I bought the pattern. :)

 and Prince C loves the cuffs and buttons! I am sure he was thinking of how to put them into him mouth. Everything goes in his mouth!

 Then he tried to get off bean bag onto the floor...

 When he noticed the Christmas tree...

 He must have had a great idea because he got really giggly!

 Then tried to eat the tree, so picture time was over for today.

 This is one of my favorite outifts for him so far. I can see me getting lots of use out of this outfit a while. It even has wee little pockets on the back! :)

Periwinkle Fairy Costume Preview

A bit of a preview of what I am working on, costumes for fall fun. Sweet pea wanted to be the new winter fairy from Tinkerbell's movie Periwinkle. While her outfit is very pretty I wanted a bit more "top" to the top.I used Oliver + S patterns for this with some mods to them. Easy peasy!

 I used kona Cotton fabric in a light pretty blue and stitched all the leave veins with shiny silver thread for a frosted look. It's very hard to the here but the pants and the dress both have been made with the "leaves". When I take action shots of this you'll be able to see them better.

 Here is the back of the top, yep feathers the whole way around. I used eye and hooks for the feather strip (found at Hobby Lobby) so that I can take them off for washing. I am sure with my toddler that it will need washing!

To finish the top and the pants off I used snowflake buttons. (you can see better here the silver thread stitching) Sweet pea is very happy with her costume and she flew  ran around the house. Next I am making her an under shirt for the chilly evening's we are having here. One down four to go!

After School Fun!

 With the cold weather coming and chilly morning we are already having I had to make Sweet pea some new pants and tops. I have wanted to make the Oliver + S After School pattern forever for her. (I bought it last year) I am sorry that I didn't make it before now.

 It such a fun pattern to sew with too. The top comes together very quickly and the pants have these ever so cute ruffle on the front and back.I just love the ruffles on these pants! I also made this pattern for baby C too. The pattern works great for girls and boys both so big bonus!

 I love those tiny back pockets too.

The pants fit  really well, the top is a bit big not bad.  It nice and roomy for play time. I did leave the pants a bit long. My though is that I know she is tall and she will still keep growing so these will fit longer than a second. The pattern was easy to follow too. Everything I have come to love about the Oliver + S patterns. You can never go wrong with them!

 All the fabric is from my grandma. She found it at Joann's. The top fabric and brown pants are all left overs from the teddy bear jumper I made her the other day.  Even the tiny pink buttons are from my grandma. :)

Ruffles and Pink Sailor Girl

 I love the Sailboat pattern from Oliver + S . I have made two tops for baby C and three bottoms. However, I wanted to make it a bit more girly for my little girl. This is what I came up with.

 I added flutter sleeves over the regular sleeve patten. I made the under sleeve in a white knit fabric so it's warm for colder weather. I also added a ruffle around the whole bottom. Sweet pea loves all the ruffles on the top! I used Sarah Jane Studios Out to Sea fabric for the top. Sweet pea calls it the "Pink Lemon-aid shirt".

 I made a 3T size for top and bottoms hoping that they fit all winter long. (Maybe a bit longer would be even nicer!) There is plenty of growing room too.

 The pants are the Ben & Mia pants from The Lily Bird Studio. I bought this pattern for my baby boy but it works wonderful for Sweet pea too. I am going to have to make my 6 year son a pair too. I love the fit of these. Very roomy for lots of running and climbing that this crazy girl does. These were so easy to make too. Lots of color picture to guide you through making them.

 Her pants are in a charcoal corduroy. These a have bit of stretch in them so it worked great for pants for her and oh so soft is the fabric to the touch!

 I always have a bit of stretching going on when I hem my knits so this time I iron on a bit of interfacing where I knew I would be stitching the hem before hand and had no stretching this time at all. :) It's about time too. ;)

 Here is a closer look at the pants, it has some great belt loops on these. I used buttons that my grandma sent.  (thanks grandma!) She sent this big bag of them. Sweet pea had a lot of fun searching through the buttons. She even slept with a little pink one all night long. :) The back of the pants I made heart pockets for girly, girl too. She loves these the most about the the pants.

I am so happy to finish a whole outfit. Lately I have been making a top here and another pants here but never the whole outfit. Maybe I can finish all the outfits I started this week....maybe.
