Fairy tale Christmas dress for Sweet pea and her doll!

Last month I made Sweet pea a purple Art Gallery Fairy Tale dress for the holiday season, it's perfect for Christmas and New Years alike. It turned out to be a favorite dress of hers. So for Christmas her doll Isabelle had to have one as well to match Sweet pea's. 

 Since Oliver and S does not have doll pattern for all their patterns yet (*Hint, hint Liesl!!)I had to draft my own. I did leave the darts off this dress but on the next one I will add them to it. This dress is sewn very much like the big version, fully lined with a full crinoline underneath and finished with a big sash bow tied on back. 

The plan was for this dress to be a Christmas morning present but Sweet pea found it before hand any way so it is now on Isabelle for the Christmas week.  She does have to change into her pj's at night though. ;-) 

Here is the skirt's details. Sweet pea wanted it to be just like hers. This dress was also sewn with just the scraps from Sweet pea's dress. I think on my next Oliver and S pattern I will do the very same again! I think this will be some fun projects for the New Year for both my daughter and I. 

Well these two all set for Christmas Eve! I still have 5 sewing days left and so much more to blog about!

A Fairy Tale Christmas and A Sew A-Long

Christmas sewing has started in my house these past few weeks, first up was miss Sweet pea's turn. I sewn her two Oliver and S Fairy Tale dresses this year for the Holiday season, one dressy and one fun. 

The more dressy one was made in non traditional colors using the Art Gallery Wonderland line. Well these are the colors Sweet pea loves at the Christmas so to her is says Christmas all the way! 

I love this dress pattern for so many reasons. The darts on the bodice makes it look just right for parties and I love all the options this pattern has, each one gives a dress a totally different look to it.  The possibilities seem endless.  

The Art gallery dress is made in View B. I love how it has the hand stitching on the sleeves and skirt to give it a lovely finish. The darts give this dress a more tailored look.  

The skirt on this dress has such a beautiful full look because not only does this dress have a fully lined inside with skirt lining but also has a full Crinoline between the skirts as well. My daughter thinks that this is the perfect party dress for dancing.  

Now our fun version of the fairy Tale! This one is made with Sweet pea's favorite Nutcracker fabric. It is not Christmas with out the Nutcracker ballet so when she seen this fabric she wanted a dress made in it. 

I made View A on this dress. It has beautiful tulip cap sleeves and a hand sewn belt with a tiny bow sewn onto the front side. 

This was one dress I couldn't get her to sit still in for photos so it is a fun dress that she wanted! ha-ha! Prince C wanted a vest made with this fabric as well so stayed tuned for tomorrow for a brother sister matching outfits! 

Now for the exciting part, the Sew Along!! Over at Whimsical fabrics this next month starting on the 7th I will be leading the fairy Tale Dress Sew Along! It is the perfect time to get ready for the holiday and party season with us.

Pinkalicious and the Pink Drink!

This year for Halloween Sweet pea decided to be Pinkalicious from the book Pinkalicious and the Pink Drink. At first she decided to be last years Elsa again but she was running int eh school's Mostermash race so she needed one costume that she could move in better so she picked this one for the one night...then decided she would rather wear this dress for all of trick-or-treating fun. She loves it! Well of course she would, it's all pink!! 

This is my only I am standing still photo, she was so thrilled with this one that she wouldn't sit still and kept twirling and singing. This happens to be her very favorite book so she thinks it's the best costume now as well. That sure makes me smile! 

I used Oliver and S Fairy Tale dress with no darts sewn on the bodice and I used a self-drafted circle skirt. It was easier than I thought it would be. The skirt does have the seam in the back for the added zipper to be sewn in as well. Her waist line and neck line are trimmed in cotton lace details to match the book's dress. 

Her dress in sleeveless but we layered it with our CC Mattie knit shirt to keep her warm on cool nights.  I put her Icing skirt I made last year under her dress so give the skirt the full look like the book as well. (As in why she wouldn't stop dancing for me to take photos, hehehehe) 

To make hemming this dress a breeze I made my own bias tape out of the dress fabric to finish off the seams neatly and quickly. 

She  even had to have a pink pumpkin bucket to match, oh and a pink flash light as well. That's my Pink loving girl!

A Fairy Tale about the Fairy Tale Dress pattern

This years costume is made with the Fairy tale dress pattern .....again. How could I not?! ;-) Its had me thinking about all the dresses I have made with the wonderful pattern so I thought why not share them all to date in one post? 

 Plus even better over at Whimsical fabrics we will be having a sew along for this dress pattern too later this fall!! 

So Here it goes! 

My very first Fairy tale I made with added smocking. I made this with the help of my over sea's wonderful friend Tamara. 

It even has piping and bouillon roses on the collar. 

#2, this one was made for Once Upon A Thread sew along. It is from her favorite American Girl book at the time. 

She even acted out the book as we were taking pictures. 

#3, the dress was made into a longer version for a princess dress for playing in. I did go all out and hand sewn glass beads onto the bodice as well. This one is still hanging up in her closet. 

I am a bit sad that it is too small now. 

#4, a Skater's dress as she calls it. (from Dora the Explorer cartoon)  I made the snowflake embroidery by hand on the bodice. I even hand painted some of the dots with white glitter paint along the hem line. She wore this dress so much! It was a favorite for a long time. 

#5 and 6. Sweet pea's Boo Peep costume. I made a full under dress and a lace up corset dress to go over it. This was a work of love and so much fun to sew! I have this one hanging up still. One day I will put it up in my sewing room I think. 

Here is a much better look at the under dress from above. It has rows of ruffles, she used this as her Easter dress the following year as well. It was made in a white fabric that lined in pink. 

Dress #7 the voile fairy tale dress with a belt.  It was made with left over fabric form a dress of mine. I had to really fussy cut to make it but it is so worth the time in making the fabric stretch!  

I even made miss Ella one to match. 

Dress #8, the one with added princess seams and lots of ruffles! I made the skirt more full as well for both the main skirt and under skirt. This one still fits her and is super special! The fabric is from my wonderful from overseas. We both cherish this one so much, we think of our sweet friend every time she wears it. 

Dress #9, the Elsa Frozen Queen one! She still wears this one a lot as well. It is full of glittery snowflakes! It is beautiful but you should have seen the house when I was sewing it. hehehe 

This one is the one above but now it works as a cute top with the puppet show shorts. This one will be making it's way to Australia this winter to the lovely Nicole for her daughter. 

Dress #10 This is the one from the Make It Mine Challenge! from Whimsical Fabrics. This one was super fun to sew! I added long sleeves from the Apple Picking dress, the neck band from the Roller skate Dress and made a hem band so I could add the piping detail. 

The bow on this pattern has to be my favorite!! 

Last but not least dress # 11! Our Pinkalicous and the Pink drink dress. (from a book) I left the darts off on this one and added a circle skirt. It was really easy to change. She will be wearing a pettie skirt under it as well. 

I am sure you can tell I really love to sew with this pattern. Whimsical Make It Mine Challenge!!

What is the Make It Mine Challenge you ask?? Well it's a contest that you use the fabrics from the Anna  Elise, Curiosities or happy Homes fabrics Art gallery that Whimsical Fabrics carries and make a creation of your choice as far as you can image! You can read all the rules and how to enter on the Whimsical Fabric Blog. 

Here is my sample entry for the MIM contest! 

First up is my daughter's outfit. I used 51% of the main fabric for my outfit on her dress and used the coordinating fabrics for her leggings and her brother's outfit. The  patterns I used are Oliver and S ; Fairy Tale dress, Apple Picking dress, Roller Skate dress and Play Time leggings all mashed into one! (All the patterns that I used came from Whimsical Fabrics' Shop)  The fabrics for my daughter's are from the Curiosities line  and the Anna Elise line. 

For the main part of my dress I used the Fairy tale dress pattern. I did change the bottom hem to add a hem band with baby piping inserted between the two. (Cord to make the piping can be found here in the shop) I did keep the original length of the dress for this one. Next I used the Apple Picking dress sleeves with the same piping that I used at the hem band. I love the way it makes the sleeve cuffs "pop". 

For the neckline I changed that up as well and used the Roller Skate neckband. I really love the V shape to it and love the yellow band going all the way to the back of the dress. I did have to reshape the pattern piece to fit the fairy Tale dress neck line. I am really happy with the finished result! 

The leggings are the Play Time Leggings pattern. I did change these a bit as well. I traced the Apple Picking sleeves rounded shape onto the bottom of the hem on the leggings to allow room for the rouching. I sewn the pants hem first with the lace and elastic first before the rest of the pants. I am sure I will be making more of these for winter! 

The last part of her outfit? This amazing lovely bow in back of the dress!! 

(The fairy Tale dress will be one of our fall sew along as well!!)

 Up next is my youngest son's outfit! I had just as much fun sewing his as I did my daughter's. I used the fabrics in the Anna Elsie line for his. The patterns are from Oliver and S Sketchbook and Sail Boat. Two of my favorite boy patterns! 

For his Sketchbook shirt I made some mods to it, not many and all were really easy to do. First off I added piping on the collar, both sides of the button placket and on the top of the pocket.

 I also added a collar stand and separate collar piece to this one as well. (This pattern the collar is only a one piece so I made it a two piece). I can see more of these being made for him as well! 

The shorts are straight from the pattern themselves. I did use the same print as his top for the pocket linings though to add some fun for him. He really loves this part!  He is crazy about pockets. The shorts are finished with a brass button to match the shirt. 

Now onto my favorite part of the Sketchbook shirt, the hem! From the shirt's outside you cannot see it but on the inside it is so cool! I made a hem facing, inspired by the Music Box Dress from O+S. I love how the dress has such a fun inside surprise and wanted to make my son's shirt the same way. It was a huge hit with him as well. The shirt is also sewn with french seam for a lovely inside finish. 

 His over shirt is made with the Sail Boat top made in all knit, the Art Gallery Knit is so soft!! I added hand embroidered bronze triangles to match the sketchbook shirt and finished it with wooden buttons. The Sail boat shirt layers lovely over the sketchbook shirt for cold weather too.  

     

This look really suits my little guy so well. Prince C's signature look it really is!
